Bbigpigg's "Din Din"

Brooklyn’s Bbigpigg brings me back to my punk days. Creating the most chaotic and abrasive sounding music with the precision of an exacto knife, sharp and angular, blasting a strong yet awkward rhythm. It's something you can almost slam dance to but then get caught on the obscurity of the music, destroying all sense of melody with the punchy low end growl of Jesus Lizard  and the playfully abstract songwriting of Captain Beefheart. Bbigpigg pulls no stops on their new EP Din Din released on Money Fire Records

With massive guitar tones and relentless drums, the opening track "Chowtime" will easily have you on edge. This music is not for the faint of heart. A piercing guitar cuts through a heavy chugging fuzz of the bass and rhythm guitar, with drums crushing you down to the dirt with its heavy cymbal crashes and sparse snare hits. It creates an unstoppable chaos that you think may never end. Then it breaks, the bass commanding the song toward a funky sliding groove, all to roll back into chaos again. This song is one hell of an opener, like a giant kick to the teeth. 

"Red Ring," the second of the four-track EP has a Sonic Youth dissonance. The guitars bending strings are so far apart that an ugly wavering sharpness rings out, like something out of a horror movie soundtrack. This is the lead-up song for someones gruesome death in a metal factory. The tinny sound of the drums truly bring out the industrial sounds of this song. The bass is what really makes this song for me; it's so mean and only revolving around a few notes. Bob Weston of Shellac would be proud. Pounding rhythms build the tension of the guitar into a bizarre noise freak out. 

A haywire of sliding guitars and dissonant chords start this fast paced-single "Partydogs." The subtle changes of the instruments make it seem like the song is only getting faster as it progresses. It's blindly charging forward into a free jazz-inspired burst of madness with the many layers of guitar and bass ricocheting like a bullet, which makes this one of my favorite's on Din Din. "Partydogs" is one of the most hard hitting songs on the EP and probably the most traditional punk Bbigpigg can get.  

"Skinning Bone," the final track of Din Din, slows their chaotic roll yet somehow maintaining that wonderful tension and noise. With its sharp jabs of guitar and a tightly locked bass and drums, the second guitar spasms out absurd notes filling that empty void. About halfway through the song the guitars attempt to break that locked groove by shifting time signatures into a blast of noise. Still maintaining the groove, the guitars quit and decide to join making a gigantic wave of fuzz. The tune is screaming and howling as it only gets louder and louder with each change up becoming more epic than the last until it just stops, ending abruptly cutting every sound immediately leaving your ears ringing.  

Bbigpigg has an unique ability to make the hook of the song within the rhythm instead of the melody., which is very refreshing to hear, no matter how bizarre or ugly the sound. This band is definitely bringing an original flavor to the bold bitter IPA of noise punk. With their raunchy vocals and violently angular songwriting, Bbigpigg breaks down social norms of what music is. If you’re a fan of bands with the ferocity of punk and the meticulous beats of math rock then this band is for you. Din Din is available now through digital download on Bandcamp and Soundcloud.
