Stuck On Play Everyday - Oh Wonder's "Lose It"

By Spike Brendle

Oh Wonder. They were first tracked on my radar early this year, most likely through Spotify Discover. The simplicity of their artwork and name were very appealing, and their music followed suit. After adding their single to my starred playlist, they were lost deep in my Spotify library, until their self-titled debut was released in early September. I was then suggested the album by my editor, and once I saw the artwork I was immediately reminded of exactly who they were.

The entire album is full of catchy, genre-crossing indie-electro-pop songs. The track that I found stuck on repeat, “Lose It,” stands out from the other tracks on the album. At the start, I almost thought I had accidentally hit play on a Jurassic 5 or Dilated Peoples track. I mentioned genre-crossing earlier, and this song is the best example of that. The vocals (throughout the entire album) play off as a dual vocal, male-female Of Monsters and Men-style layered sing along. Mixing this with an indie vibe over hip-hop and R&B beats with a touch of a clean grand piano is very unique, and very worthy of replay.

The duo, Josephine Vander Gucht and Anthony West, are London-based, but have reached worldwide fame during the past year by writing, recording, and releasing one new song every month up to the release of their full album. On tour starting later this month, they are set to hit Australia, North America (mostly sold out), and the UK. From the looks of it, they are a band to keep track of - and judging by their popularity thus far, will be hard not to hear about.
